And as every day goes by, I think the problem is only going to get worse, not better."

"There is a level of risk that gets injected into the system when we have a controller that's doing two jobs instead of one," Duffy explained while a ground stop was in effect at Newark Liberty International Airport due to staffing issues.

The Transportation Department has faced criticism for its handling of the situation. Initially, Secretary Duffy suggested that controllers who didn't report to work would be fired, but he later softened that stance after significant backlash.

"They need support, they need money, they need a paycheck. They don't need to be fired," Duffy told CBS' "Face the Nation" over the weekend.
